Dry weather conditions in crop fields in 2026 will create a favorable environment for insects to reproduce and become more destructive. Therefore, in their forecasts for 2027, farmers are paying close attention to which insects might attack grain crops in Kazakhstan under such conditions. Pests not only directly damage plants but can also carry diseases, which further affects the harvest. This has indeed led to significant losses—as high as 15–30% or more. Sudden changes in temperature and humidity, as well as uneven rainfall distribution, can create conditions conducive to the mass reproduction of particular pest species:Locusts (Asian migratory locust, Italian locust, Moroccan locust). During dry, hot summers, their migration activity intensifies—they can move in large numbers and destroy crops.
Aphids. Sudden changes in temperature and humidity (for example, when a period of rain is followed by a heat wave) are particularly favourable for outbreaks of aphids.
Wheat thrips. They are particularly dangerous during the heading and grain-filling stages: the larvae and adults damage the ears, causing whitish spots and grain deformation.
Various types of mites (Atlantic spider mite, wheat mite). Hot, dry weather creates favorable conditions for them: they reproduce actively, colonize crops, and cause damage.
Stem borers during early growing stages (sprouting and tillering): Hessian fly, wheat stem sawfly.
Bugs (bishop’s mitre, sunn pest, tarnished plant bugs) that, in arid regions during the growing season, can migrate in mass from meadow grasses to wheat and barley crops.
During such seasons, it is especially important to conduct phytosanitary monitoring of fields in a timely manner to prevent pest populations from exceeding the economic threshold. It also makes sense to plan a control strategy in advance: which insecticides to use and which agricultural practices will help reduce pest populations.
