For the development of the livestock industry in the Republic of Kazakhstan requires a sustainable fodder base, which is possible with the use of high-yielding crops and varieties adapted to growing conditions.
Thus, in the department of perennial grasses breeding of “SPC GF named after A.I. Barayev” LLP conducts research on the creation of breeding material and new varieties of Sudan grass with high economic-valuable features for the conditions of Northern Kazakhstan.
Among annual grasses the most high-yielding cereal forage crop is Sudan grass of hay-pasture type of use for the conditions of Northern Kazakhstan. Due to slow growth at the beginning of vegetation and rapid growth and biomass formation in the subsequent period, it relatively easily tolerates the June drought and effectively uses the July maximum precipitation, which is typical for the northern regions of the country. It quickly regrows after mowing, and forms a second cutting in the presence of precipitation. Sudan grass is well eaten by all kinds of animals, it is used for green fodder, hay, haylage, and silage preparation.
Currently, the interest of farmers in the northern regions in Sudan grass has increased due to the stable yield and high fodder qualities of this crop.
As of 2023, 17 varieties of Sudan grass are registered in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In North Kazakhstan (North Kazakhstan, Akmola, Pavlodar, Kostanay regions) allowed in production of 11 varieties, including a variety Nika of “SPC GF named after A.I. Barayev” breeding, released in 2021 in Akmola region.
December 7, 2023 at a meeting of the Commission chaired by Vice-Minister of Agriculture Sultanov AS. and RSD “State Commission on Variety Testing of Agricultural Crops” of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan to consider issues of variety testing of agricultural crops: additions and amendments to the State Register of breeding achievements recommended for use in the Republic of Kazakhstan for 2024, it was proposed to expand the areas of use and allow the production of Sudan grass variety Nika in Kostanay, Pavlodar and West Kazakhstan regions of the Republic of Kazakhstan since 2024.
Height measurements and yield records of Sudan grass in breeding nurseries
The breeding process for Sudan grass continues, with breeding material and varieties being developed annually.
In 2023, under the target financing of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan Program BR10765056: “Creation of high-yielding varieties and hybrids of grain crops based on the achievements of biotechnology, genetics, physiology, biochemistry of plants for their sustainable production in different soil and climatic zones of Kazakhstan” under the activity “Breeding of high-yielding, adapted to stress factors of the environment varieties, hybrids of grain and forage sorghum” breeding material and a new variety of Sudan grass were created and transferred to the SVT
