Monitoring of snow cover, snowfall dynamics and erosion processes in the fields of the SPC GF named after A.I. Barayev

News

SPC GF named after A.I. Barayev carries out systematic observations of snow cover condition and snowmelt dynamics.

The purpose of monitoring is to control water erosion based on remote sensing of the land using satellite, aerial images and video fixation.

On 02 April 2025, employees of the Precision Farming Laboratory carried out an initial field survey. By means of DJI Matrice 300 RTK unmanned aerial vehicle the production and laboratory fields of «SPC GF named after A.I. Barayev» were overflew.

The start of snowmelt occurred in mid-March. In contrast to the previous year, when the beginning of snowmelt occurred at the end of March. As in the previous year 2024 due to autumn rains and frosts, the ground became icy in winter. But to a lesser extent compared to last year. This reduced soil permeability, which increased meltwater flows. During the initial monitoring of the condition of SPC GF’s fields, waterlogging and formation of sink holes were noted.

Due to frequent temperature changes, the intensity of snowmelt is currently less active. Forming watercourses, planar erosion of the arable layer and gully formation are not observed at the Precision Farming Range.
