Today the Scientific and Production Centre of Grain Farming named after A.I. Barayev was visited by Kunsulu Zakarya, Counsellor of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan on Science and Innovation, Zulfiya Suleimenova, Special Representative of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan on International Environmental Cooperation, Erbol Taszhurekov, Vice-Minister of Agriculture, Aigul Akhmedjanova, Chairman of the Board of “NASEC” NJSC to discuss the issues of replenishment, saving and reproduction of valuable genetic resources of agricultural plants.
As part of the visit, the delegation was acquainted with experimental experimental fields, where nurseries of new varieties of cereals, leguminous, grain-forage and perennial crops, as well as agrotechnical methods of their cultivation were presented. The results of research and breeding programmes were presented to the guests, which aroused great interest. The participants of the meeting also visited the laboratory of genetic resources. Here, work is carried out on the study and saving of the gene pool of agricultural plants, selection of sources of valuable traits for use in breeding and formation of genetic database. During the meeting they discussed the issues of ensuring food security and especially mentioned the scientific support in terms of development of agro-genomics and raising the status of the Genetic Data Bank of agricultural crops and also mentioned the issue of material and technical equipment of scientific laboratories. Attention was drawn to the need to join efforts of Kazakhstani and international scientific institutions in the field of breeding. Special attention was paid to the training of specialists of the new generation.
Reference
Over the years, the Genetic Resources Laboratory has studied more than 20,000 samples of spring soft and durum wheat, barley, oats, and triticale. In the process of study, about 2,000 sources combining breeding-valuable traits with adaptability to local conditions were identified. Selected samples were transferred to breeders of the Centre, research institutes of Kazakhstan for use in practical breeding.
On the basis of the laboratory’s data bank 8 catalogues of the world collection of cereals and grain-forage crops of gene pool of SPC GF named after A.I. Barayev were made and published. The catalogues are prepared for breeders where presented the results of the study of the collection for the most important biological and economically valuable features.
The gene pool of grain and grain-forage crops is represented by varieties and hybrid forms from 63 countries of the world (Kazakhstan, Russia, Canada, USA, Belarus, Ukraine, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Mongolia, Pakistan, Japan, Korea, Syria, Turkey, Norway, Finland, Poland, France, Germany, Sweden, Belgium, etc.) and makes up 6,653 samples, of which 80% is spring soft wheat.
