The gene pool of A.I.Baraev Scientific-production center for grain farming has more than 8000 samples, of which 70% are crops. Successful breeding requires the genetic diversity of each genus and species (high potential for productivity and quality, resistance to diseases and pests, drought tolerance, precocity, etc.), with the help of which breeders could create any gene and environmental gene combinations.

The gene pool of grain and feed crops is represented by sorts and breeding lines from 83 countries. In 2019, 310 new spring wheat samples of various ecological and geographical origins are studied in the collection nursery according to the main biological and economically valuable features (growing season, early maturity, drought tolerance, spike productivity elements, yield, coarse grain, protein content, etc.).

To maintain the viability of the gene pool (restoration of samples with a germination rate below 80%), field collections are used in which 612 samples were sown this year.
