Conserving, studying, and identifying valuable traits

Conserving, studying, and identifying valuable traits—this is where the effective use of plant genetic resources in breeding begins.
The Scientific and Production Centre of Grain Farming named after A.I. Baraev conducts comprehensive research on crop specimen collections. Accessions undergo field and laboratory evaluation to assess agronomically important traits, productivity, and other characteristics.
The main objective is not only to conserve genetic diversity but also to identify the most promising forms and sources of valuable traits within the collection for use in developing new breeding material and crop varieties.
Every accession studied and conserved is a potential source of traits needed for plant breeding today and in the future.
This work is carried out as part of an activity under the targeted research funding program BR22885305, “Breeding and Genetic Technology for Developing Systems for the Long-Term Conservation, Regeneration, Monitoring, and Sustainable Use of Agrobiodiversity as a Foundation for Improving Breeding Program in the Republic of Kazakhstan”.
