The SPC GF named after A.I. Baraev started harvesting breeding crops of lentils
News

In the fields of the “Scientific and Production Centre of Grain Farming named after A.I. Baraev” LLP, employees of the legume and oilseed crop breeding laboratory started harvesting breeding crops of lentils grown as part of the programme: “Creation of high-yielding varieties of leguminous crops based on modern biological methods, development of their varietal technology and primary seed production” BR – 22885414. At this stage, employees carry out a complex of field work, including: registration and documentation of morphological characteristics of samples, selection of plants for subsequent analysis in laboratory conditions, harvesting of plots using a specialised WINTERSTEIGER Classic selection harvester, and preparation of the harvested material for assessment of yield and seed quality.
The aim of the research was to identify the most promising lentil genotypes based on a set of economically valuable traits: productivity, resistance to stress factors (drought, lodging, shattering), and stability of yield formation under changing climate conditions.
The importance of crop for the region
Lentils occupy an important place in the structure of grain production in Northern Kazakhstan. They are distinguished by their high nutritional value, demand on domestic and foreign markets, and agronomic advantages, such as the ability to enrich the soil with nitrogen, improving its fertility. The inclusion of lentils in crop rotation helps to reduce the load on soil resources and increases the sustainability of agroecosystems.
Comments from Ten E.A., head of the legume and oilseed breeding laboratory: “Every season, we face new challenges related to weather conditions and climate changes. Our task is to select and create lentil varieties that are not only high-yielding but also as well adapted to our conditions as possible. The results of this harvest will show which samples will be recommended for further breeding work.”
