Taimas: a new standard in spring wheat breeding

As part of the project to commercialize the results of scientific and (or) scientific and technical activities for 2023-2025 «Providing the Kazakh market with elite seeds of domestic spring wheat varieties», «Scientific and Production Center of Grain Farming named after A.I. Barayev» LLP carried out work on the propagation and improvement of seed production of the Taimas spring wheat variety. This variety, bred earlier, has become a symbol of innovation in breeding and adaptation to Kazakhstan’s climate challenges.

Why choose Timas?

1. Drought and disease resistance: Taimas grows successfully even in conditions of lack of moisture, resistant to brown rust, which was strongly appeared in 2024.
2. High yield: The average yield is 34.0 c/ha, under unfavorable conditions in 2024. In the arid conditions of Karaganda region in 2024, «Naydorovskoye» LLP, where all agrotechnological measures were observed, the yield exceeded 40 c/ha.
3. Grains quality: The stable characteristics of the grain make the variety suitable for various agricultural needs.

Work results in 2024

The project included a full cycle of measures for the propagation of seeds of the variety Taimas:

• The area of seed nurseries was 86.4 ha.
• The gross grain harvest amounted to 293.2 tons.
• Modern technologies of tillage, crop care and harvesting were used using the Wintersteiger Classic breeding combine and the Sampo Rosenlew COMIA C8 seed harvester.

The importance of the Taimas variety for agriculture

Timas is created to ensure sustainability and productivity even in the most difficult conditions:

• It helps farmers to improve the quality and yield of grain.
• The variety supports the development of Kazakh breeding and reduces dependence on imported solutions.
• Taimas helps strengthen the country’s agricultural potential.

Working with farmers and promoting

In 2024, events were implemented to demonstrate the benefits of the Taimas variety:

• Field seminars were organized in Kostanay and Karaganda regions, where farmers were able to get acquainted with the peculiarities of the variety.

• Participation in agricultural exhibitions: «Kazakhstan Field Day «Jana Dala/Green Day ‘2024», Kazakhstan International Agricultural Exhibition «KazAgro — 2024», Kazakhstan Contracting Conference «Tukym Seed Day-2025» and publications in specialized publications allowed to attract the attention of the professional association.
